Susie’s Tips for the week ahead: Time for the party season
The Christmas party invites have begun to trickle (or stream) in for many of us, which means that over the next 6 weeks there will be much food, alcohol and Christmas treats added into our diets. Without playing the part of the dietitian Grinch who tried to steal all things scrumptious and tasty, here are some tips to avoid a calorie overload and a number of extra kilos come 2008:

Never go to a Christmas party starving, always have a light, protein rich snack such as a nut bar or peanut butter corn thins before you go to avoid overindulging on the pastries and dips

Limit high fat treats including mince pies to the Christmas week
Swap beer, wine and champagne to spirits with low calorie mixers
Swap dinner for a light soup or salad when you have eaten out
Maintain your routine exercise and add in some extra walking to compensate for the extra calories

Christmas calorie nightmares – remember, an average adult with burn 1500-1800 calories/day
Mince pie = 350 calories
Christmas cake = 350 calories
Filo triangle = 400 calories
Spring roll = 100 calories
Handful of chocolate sultanas = 150 calories

And finally, a few weeks back I made mention to various commercial weight loss programs and have inadvertently made an error. Sure Slim are neither closing down, not does Sure Slim use weight loss shakes. I apologise for this error, I must have had the company confused with someone else.

Product of the week: Lipton Light Iced Tea - http://www.rexona.com.au/ourbrands/foods/lipton_products/Lipton_ice_tea.asp

I am repeatedly surprised by the number of people who enjoy iced teas; clients ranging from footy players to 85 year old grandmothers and now we have a sugar free option for the warmer Summer months that contains the same amount of antioxidants as cup of brewed green tea. I also suspect this product will go very nicely with vodka this party season.

Food Tip of the Week:  Freedom foods - http://www.100healthycalories.com.au/
Calorie counting is starting to make a come back, particularly in the States and although calories alone do not take into account the quality of the foods we are eating, they do give us a pretty good idea of how much of certain types of food we should eat. This fantastic Australian company has developed a line of products that are packaged into 100 calories snack size serves. Check out the website for all of the options.

Your Body: Interval Training - http://health.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=275006
Some months back many of you would have seen the segment on “What’s Good for you” in relation to interval training. If you are a regular gym attendee, yes, you are likely to get much greater results if you interval-train using intervals. Ideas for each of the machines are as follows:

Stationary bike:  30 secs flat out, 30 secs easy
Treadmill: 1 minute jog, 1 min sprint
Rower: 8 secs sprint, 12 secs off

Recipe of the Week: Winning salads
Some tasty salad mixes for the warmer evenings:
Red salmon, Danish feta, red capsicum, tomato, rocket, Spanish onion, balsamic dressing
Roast pumpkin, English spinach, marinated feta, lentils
Grilled lamb, feta, roasted sweet potato, tomato, assorted lettuce, cucumber
Roasted eggplant, sweet potato, zucchini, Spanish onion with rocket, goats cheese
Parmesan chicken, carrots, snow peas, green beans, yoghurt dressing
Brown rice, corn, diced capsicum, pecans, tuna
4 bean mix, diced celery, carrots, Spanish onion, balsamic dressing
Roast beetroot, rocket, Persian feta, walnuts

Your Life: The 4 Agreements
As the spiritual section of bookstores continues to grow, it can be difficult to identify works that are both well written and have meaning for a range of life situations. “The 4 Agreements”, the pocket book written by world renown spiritual academic Don Miguel Ruiz is a very powerful book centered on living life according to these 4 basic daily mantras which really make a lot of sense.

Do not take things personally
Make no assumptions
Always do your best
Choose your world impeccably

Have a productive week
